St. Mary of Egypt: Hagiography, Hymn, and Reflection

March 23, 2018 / St. Nikolai (Velimirovich)

Fr. Zosima at the Death of St. Mary of Egypt

The Fifth Sunday of Lent normally commemorates St Mary of Egypt, once a harlot in sixth century Alexandria, but by the grace of God, one of our most endearing and enduring saints. This year, however, this date of her commemoration coincides with the date of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, and the brilliance of the light shining from this latter event will eclipse … [Read more...] about St. Mary of Egypt: Hagiography, Hymn, and Reflection

Saint Seraphim of Sarov on the Acquisition of the Holy Spirit: A Conversation with Motovilov

March 2, 2018 / Unknown

Part I. Source: Orthodox Christianity. Reprinted with permission. An example of the grace of the Holy Spirit at work within the life and words of St. Seraphim of Sarov has been preserved for us. Nilus wrote the following … [Read more...] about Saint Seraphim of Sarov on the Acquisition of the Holy Spirit: A Conversation with Motovilov

Who’s Mary Magdalene?

January 12, 2018 / Olga Rozhneva

Monastery of St. Mary Magdalene in Jerusalem

Source: Orthodox Christianity. Reprinted with permission. By Olga Rozhneva Marina was shivering and reached for her warm sweater—the air conditioner was blasting. True, it was much more comfortable in the new Israeli bus than in the former, shabby Egyptian one, where even the seat backs were broken and wouldn’t stay upright. Regina the tour guide, a … [Read more...] about Who’s Mary Magdalene?

A Miracle by Elder Paissios

December 12, 2017 / Fr. Johannes L. Jacobse

St. Paissios of Athos

I held off talking about this miracle by Elder Paisios publicly until the miracle was complete, which it nearly is. I was asked to write an account of the miracle to be included in the papers sent to the Ecumenical Patriarchate where a decision will be made soon on the canonization of Elder Paisios as a Saint. I offer it here for the glory of God and the edification of the … [Read more...] about A Miracle by Elder Paissios

The Vision of Another City

Another City. But what is this other city? The Other City is Jerusalem, the Holy City standing on Mt Zion high above the pagan cities of the Ancient World. Yet it is also the obscure, outlying village of Bethlehem, in which Christ Himself was born. It is Constantinople, the New Rome, and it is the Desert City of the monks, set up spontaneously as a spiritual alternative to the imperial city. It is the Heavenly City, which stands as a beacon to present-day civilization, and ultimately it is the New Jerusalem, for which we yearn and toward which we strive.
