The Life of Our Venerable Mother Mary of Egypt

April 12, 2019 / St. Sophronios Patriarch of Jerusalem

St. Zosima and St. Mary

This Life of Our Venerable Mother Mary of Egypt was written down in the seventh century by Saint Sophronios, Patriarch of Jerusalem, some hundred years after the repose of the holy Mary, who fell asleep in the Lord April 1, 522. It is one of the most beautiful and edifying lives of a saint. Its obvious and stated purpose is to glorify God and to feed the souls of its … [Read more...] about The Life of Our Venerable Mother Mary of Egypt

Getting Serious For 40 Days: An introduction to the Great Canon of St. Andrew

March 12, 2019 / Frederica Mathewes-Green

Draw night to God and He will draw nigh to you.

The Canon of St. Andrew, the nine ode prayer of repentance written by St. Andrew of Crete in the early 700's, is the customary way Orthodox Christians around the world enter the penitential season of Lent. St. Andrew wrote the prayer with the deepest humility, a virtue necessary for entering into the presence of God in ways that foster salvation, and the man who prays it … [Read more...] about Getting Serious For 40 Days: An introduction to the Great Canon of St. Andrew

St. Paisios of Mt. Athos on Love and Kindness

November 19, 2018 / St. Paisios of Mt. Athos

St. Paisios of Mt. Athos on Love and Kindness

“He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is love” (I John 4:8). So explains St John, Beloved of Christ. Love is at the center of our Orthodox faith, and indeed as the epistle reminds us, at the center of being itself. Assembled here is a selection of short sayings or aphorisms from St Paisios of Mt Athos, whose love for God, for his fellow humanity, and for … [Read more...] about St. Paisios of Mt. Pray First, Then Mow! Modern Life at the Convent of St. Thecla and the Dormition

August 30, 2018 / Olga Rozhneva

Despite the abundance of recent news on Russia, much of it false or distorted, little attention has been shown to the remarkable renaissance of Orthodox Christianity in that country. Yet during less than thirty years since the fall of the Soviet Union, the number of churches in Russia has risen from less than 500 to nearly 40,000—about four new or restored churches per day! … [Read more...] about Pray First, Then Mow! Source: Orthodox Christianity. Reprinted with permission. By Dimitri Andrault de Langeron The story behind this text: My name is Gregory and around the years 2003-2006 I had the honor of spending time with, praying with and listening to the spiritual words of a truly humble man who loved Orthodoxy with all his heart. I speak of Dimitri Langeron, who lives with his wife … [Read more...] about An Unpublished Life of Fr. Seraphim Rose, Written By His Godfather

The Vision of Another City

Another City. But what is this other city? The Other City is Jerusalem, the Holy City standing on Mt Zion high above the pagan cities of the Ancient World. Yet it is also the obscure, outlying village of Bethlehem, in which Christ Himself was born. It is Constantinople, the New Rome, and it is the Desert City of the monks, set up spontaneously as a spiritual alternative to the imperial city. It is the Heavenly City, which stands as a beacon to present-day civilization, and ultimately it is the New Jerusalem, for which we yearn and toward which we strive.
