A Sermon of Metropolitan Philaret on the Sunday of St John of the Ladder

March 17, 2018 / Metropolitan Philaret

Remember, Christian soul, that the ascent to heaven is indispensable for anyone who wishes to save his soul unto eternity. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: "Strive to enter in through the narrow gate." That is, the Christian ought to be an ascetic. Not only the monastic, but every Christian. But if while ascending this ladder of spiritual perfection by struggles and ascetic … [Read more...] about A Sermon of Metropolitan Philaret on the Sunday of St John of the Ladder

Homily on the Triumph of Orthodoxy by St. Tikhon of Moscow Delivered in San Francisco in 1903

February 24, 2018 / St. Tikhon of Moscow

Icon of the Triumph of Orthodoxy

Source: Monachos This sermon, delivered in 1903 on the Sunday of Orthodoxy (first Sunday of Great Lent) at the Cathedral Church in San Francisco, presents the missionary call to which all are exhorted, which itself is part-and-parcel with the gift of the Church that all Orthodox have received. It is perhaps even more timely today than when it was first delivered: How … [Read more...] about Homily on the Triumph of Orthodoxy by St. Tikhon of Moscow Delivered in San Francisco in 1903

On The Feast of the Presentation

The Presentation of the Lord in the Temple ! From the Menologion of Basil II (10th Century)

Source: Orthodox England By Fr. Andrew Phillips In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Today's Feast has no fewer than four different names. Each name recalls a different aspect of this Feast. What are they? First of all, today's Feast is called the Presentation of Christ. This is because it commemorates the Presentation of Christ by His … [Read more...] about On The Feast of the Presentation

Kontakion for the Holy Theophany

January 8, 2018 / St. Romanos the Melodist

St. Romanos the Melodist

By St. Romanos the Melodist Today you have appeared to the whole world, and your light, O Lord, has made a sign upon us who, with knowledge, sing your praise, “You have come, you have appeared, the unapproachable Light.” In Galilee of the Gentiles, in the country of Zebulon and the land of Nepthali, as the prophet said, a great light has shone—Christ … [Read more...] about Kontakion for the Holy Theophany

The Vision of Another City

Another City. But what is this other city? The Other City is Jerusalem, the Holy City standing on Mt Zion high above the pagan cities of the Ancient World. Yet it is also the obscure, outlying village of Bethlehem, in which Christ Himself was born. It is Constantinople, the New Rome, and it is the Desert City of the monks, set up spontaneously as a spiritual alternative to the imperial city. It is the Heavenly City, which stands as a beacon to present-day civilization, and ultimately it is the New Jerusalem, for which we yearn and toward which we strive.
