Delivered to Immortality: A Paschal Homily of St Justin (Popovich) of Chelije

April 8, 2018 / St. Justin Popovich

The Resurrection of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

Source: Preacher's Institute By St. Justin Popovich Man sentenced God to death; by His Resurrection, He sentenced man to immortality. In return for a beating, He gives an embrace; for abuse, a blessing; for death, immortality. Man never showed so much hate for God as when he crucified Him; and God never showed more love for man than when He arose. Man even wanted to … [Read more...] about Delivered to Immortality: A Paschal Homily of St Justin (Popovich) of Chelije

A Godly Contemplative Meditation on the Most Holy Sufferings of Our Lord Jesus Christ

April 6, 2018 / St Dimitri of Rostov

Christ the Bridegroom

With this text, Another City inaugurates a new feature of our journal, in which we offer the reader substantial portions (typically chapters) of books (many of them recently published) that we believe hold a particular importance for Orthodox Christians. Here, thanks to St Vladimir’s Seminary Press, we encounter one of the most important but strangely neglected saints and … [Read more...] about A Godly Contemplative Meditation on the Most Holy Sufferings of Our Lord Jesus Christ

Homily on the Entrance of the Lord into Jerusalem

March 29, 2018 / St. Luke Archbishop of Crimea

The people spread out their clothing upon the road before Jesus, waving palm branches, and proclaiming in their exaltation, Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the King that cometh in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest! Our Lord Jesus Christ was met not as a king of earthly glory, but as a spiritual King. They shouted to Him, … [Read more...] about Homily on the Entrance of the Lord into Jerusalem

Homily on the Annunciation

March 24, 2018 / St. Nicholas Cabasilas

For the Virgin was not like the earth, which contributed to the creation of man but did not bring it about, for it merely offered itself as matter to the Creator and was only acted upon and did not do anything. But those things which drew the Artificer Himself to earth and which moved His creative hand did she provide from within herself, being the author thereof. What were … [Read more...] about Homily on the Annunciation

The Vision of Another City

Another City. But what is this other city? The Other City is Jerusalem, the Holy City standing on Mt Zion high above the pagan cities of the Ancient World. Yet it is also the obscure, outlying village of Bethlehem, in which Christ Himself was born. It is Constantinople, the New Rome, and it is the Desert City of the monks, set up spontaneously as a spiritual alternative to the imperial city. It is the Heavenly City, which stands as a beacon to present-day civilization, and ultimately it is the New Jerusalem, for which we yearn and toward which we strive.
