Homily on the Annunciation

March 24, 2018 / St. Nicholas Cabasilas

For the Virgin was not like the earth, which contributed to the creation of man but did not bring it about, for it merely offered itself as matter to the Creator and was only acted upon and did not do anything. But those things which drew the Artificer Himself to earth and which moved His creative hand did she provide from within herself, being the author thereof. What were … [Read more...] about Homily on the Annunciation

Homily on the Triumph of Orthodoxy by St. Tikhon of Moscow Delivered in San Francisco in 1903

February 24, 2018 / St. Tikhon of Moscow

Icon of the Triumph of Orthodoxy

Source: Monachos This sermon, delivered in 1903 on the Sunday of Orthodoxy (first Sunday of Great Lent) at the Cathedral Church in San Francisco, presents the missionary call to which all are exhorted, which itself is part-and-parcel with the gift of the Church that all Orthodox have received. It is perhaps even more timely today than when it was first delivered: How … [Read more...] about Homily on the Triumph of Orthodoxy by St. Tikhon of Moscow Delivered in San Francisco in 1903

The Presentation of the Lord in the Temple ! From the Menologion of Basil II (10th Century)

Source: Orthodox England By Fr. Andrew Phillips In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Today's Feast has no fewer than four different names. Each name recalls a different aspect of this Feast. What are they? First of all, today's Feast is called the Presentation of Christ. This is because it commemorates the Presentation of Christ by His … [Read more...] about On The Feast of the Presentation

On the Baptism of Christ

January 3, 2018 / St. Gregory Nazianzus

The Baptism of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

By St. Gregory of Nazianzus Again my Jesus, and again a mystery, a mystery lofty and divine and bringing down light from above. For the feast which we are celebrating today has for its origin the baptism of my Christ, the true light that illumines every man that comes into the world and brings about my own purification and strengthens that light which we received from the … [Read more...] about On the Baptism of Christ

The Vision of Another City

Another City. But what is this other city? The Other City is Jerusalem, the Holy City standing on Mt Zion high above the pagan cities of the Ancient World. Yet it is also the obscure, outlying village of Bethlehem, in which Christ Himself was born. It is Constantinople, the New Rome, and it is the Desert City of the monks, set up spontaneously as a spiritual alternative to the imperial city. It is the Heavenly City, which stands as a beacon to present-day civilization, and ultimately it is the New Jerusalem, for which we yearn and toward which we strive.
